PROJECT OVERVIEW

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is completing the I-25 Safety & Capacity Study (Control Number LC00380), on I-25 from the Lohman Interchange to the Doña Ana Interchange and along NM 320 (Thorpe Road) from Barela Drive to I-25.

PURPOSE AND NEED

The purpose of the study is to improve safety, accommodate regional growth, and address deficiencies (e.g., pavement, drainage, Americans with Disabilities Act facilities, roadway geometry, access control, and multi-modal connectivity).

Previous Public Outreach in 2024


One Public Meeting was held in February of 2024, that focused on sharing the alternatives considered, as well as study team recommendations, with the public.  Comment and Concerns received by the public are summarized below:


Community Input for All 3 Alternatives

  • Questions about bike/pedestrian facilities at Engler Interchange
  • Request for regional bike and pedestrian trail system connections
  • Concerns for bike/pedestrian safety around the I-25/Dona Ana Interchange ramps and in the study area
  • Questions/concerns about funding timeframe for Thorpe Road, including interim improvements
  • Concerns about big trucks on Thorpe Road

Previous Public Outreach in 2023


Two Public Meetings were held in February of 2023: One meeting was focused on the I-25 corridor between Lohman and Doña Ana Interchanges and the other meeting was focused on NM 320 (Thorpe Road).  Comment and Concerns received by the public are summarized below:

Community Input for I-25

  • Congestion on I-25 from Lohman to US 70;
  • Short Merge lane from Lohman to I-25;
  • Add Engler Connection to I-25;
  • Drainage and Flooding of the Interstate near Doña Ana

Community Input for Thorpe Road

  • Request to Maintain 2 Travel Lanes;
  • Concerns with Increasing Truck Traffic;
  • Speeding is an Issue;
  • Congestion is an Issue;
  • Request for Multiuse, Sidewalks, Bike, and Transit Facilities, and Safe Crossings;
  • Support for Roundabouts;
  • Opposition to Roundabouts;
  • Request for Visual Enhancements (signage, benches, lighting, plantings, art);
  • Intersections at Gas Stations Unsafe for Peds/Drivers
